Basic Eligibility

Requirements

You must meet these minimum requirements to join the DC Army National Guard: 

  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident 
  • Be between the ages of 17 and 35 
  • Be in good health and physical condition 
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent (or be working toward it) 
  • Take and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) 
  • Have no major law violations or drug abuse

The DC Army National Guard offers prior service members a unique opportunity to continue their military careers. Whether you’re coming off active duty or have served in another reserve component, the DCARNG allows you to maintain your rank, continue earning time toward retirement, and access Guard-specific benefits and incentives.

Prior Service Eligibility Requirements:

If you’ve served in any branch of the U.S. military, you may be eligible to join the DC Army National Guard. Requirements include: 

  • Having an Honorable Discharge (or be eligible for reenlistment) 
  • Meeting age and service time criteria (generally must be able to complete 20 years of service before age 60) 
  • Passing a medical exam and meeting physical standards 
  • Retesting or retraining if your previous MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) is not available
